Makemo is the third largest atoll in the Tuamotus based on the extent of its lagoon. Its width only varies from 5 to 8 kilometers but its length extends 65 kilometers from the northwest to the southeast. Located 500 kilometers to the east of Tahiti and still relatively unknown, Makemo is coming out of its isolation little by little thanks to its growing tourism. It is quite blessed with numerous assets: superb ocean depths renowned for the diversity and richness of the underwater fauna, innumerable motus with totally preserved fine sand beaches, the peaceful village of Pouheva with its immaculate white church or still yet the mysterious ghost village of Punaruku, deserted a long time ago. Nowadays, the inhabitants live mainly from fishing and copra farming. Pearl farming is in full development there.
Makemo is a place full of history and legends. "Discovered” in 1803 by Buyer at the same time as Taenga and Faaite, it was formerly the homeland of the hero Moeava, a famous warrior who accomplished numerous exploits in the Tuamotu Archipelago. It is also said that the sirens, the Mokorea, had elected to inhabit a motu near a small stretch of fresh water. In 1926, the navigator Alain Gerbault had made a stop there and was so charmed that he nicknamed Makemo “the atoll of perfection”. In fact, the purity of its emerald lagoon, the peaceful atmosphere that reigns there and its multiple points of interest make it a dream destination at the end of the world…
