Ua Huka, one of the smallest islands of the Marquesas, lies 50 km east of Nuku Hiva and 56 km north-east of Ua Pou. This wild and deep universe offers a preserved nature with steep slopes and desertic plateaux. A few islets are home to thousands of birds who find them an ideal nestling site. The wide greenish areas are the goats' domains as well as the one of more than 3000 wild horses which one can see on the only road of the island. More than 144 varieties of citrus fruits are to be found at the arboretum of Papuakeiha, alongside plants of rare essentials oils and acclimatized species.
Ua Huka also hosts interresting archeological sites such as Vaikivi petroglyphs and the superb tikis of Hane. There are 4 museums to visit and the one in Vaipaee has great symbolic value for the heritage-proud Marquesans: tikis, finely carved sculptures, a variety of jewellery and period photos. Ua Huka's sculptors are the most famous in the Marquesas and they display their works in the villages' craft centers. The inhabitants live quietly and welcome you with a warm and happy smile.
